Story is simple in itself: man and woman "loves" each other, then she die, he start new life with a new woman, but memories could not leave him. His dead love was an artist, and starting with preserving her paintings he goes into weird obsession, when he treats her like a God. What is unique: deepness of psychonalisis of slight movements of characters and immense auto-thematic ambitions of author-narrator. Novel was wrote in 1905, before modernism and before psychonalisis of Freud, Irzykowski giant innovator must carry off WITHOUT correct terminology, as things he described werent "existing" back then. Novel has few layars, while one of them is fictional story, other layer is describing creative act, and even explaining characters motives as seen by writer-narrator. Adding to mix short story by Irzykowski "Sny Marii Dunin" and how this fictional story has impact on fictional characters of fictional novel "Pałuba", and we has peculiar post-modern labirynth, made much before anyone thought about post-modernism. I think novel actually is a failure (mostly because i dont like overtly descriptive, pedantic prose, which havent much of actual poetic merit (despite Irzykowski calling himself "poet) ) but it is very beautiful and ambitious failure
